My First Week at Elite SEM

By Tinuiti Team

Walking into the world of search engine marketing at Elite has definitely been my first real taste of digital marketing. Coming from a school that doesn’t offer a single class in digital media marketing (or anything that even come close), I never really knew how sponsored and promoted ads, accounts, or even tweets worked. Worse, this is my sixth internship in the advertising industry, and it’s the first time I’ve seen, heard, or worked with Google AdWords! Let’s just say that my first week has been an eye-opener, to say the least.

My biggest challenge so far has been learning the lingo and understanding all the different components involved in SEM. Search networks v. display networks, contextual ads v. placement ads, automatic v, managed v. excluded targeting, e-commerce v. branded v. lead generation objectives … the list goes on. I can’t tell you have much I’ve learned in such a short amount of time, or how much further I have to go!

I don’t think I could ask for a better first week experience. The managers here have been so helpful and supportive, encouraging questions and offering thorough explanation of any material that is unclear. I’ve been able to sit in on meetings and review weekly performance reports of some of our top clients, giving me a great overview of what’s to come. I’ve gotten the opportunity to work on keyword buildups, ad campaigns, and promoted tweets for one of our new Twitter campaigns. I know some of my classmates at Rutgers have objectives of sitting in on one to two meetings by the time their internships are complete– I listened in on three my first day!

I’m extremely excited to see what the rest of my time here brings me. Not only will I come out with meaningful work experience, but I will also be Google Adwords and MSN AdExcellence certified (which I know is more than what most of my classmates will be able to say). I’m hoping once I get down the basics, the rest will come a little more easily. If this first week is any kind of preview of the coming months, it’s going to be one incredible adventure.

Wish me luck! 🙂
