Google Shopping Expanding to New Territory

Last month Google announced that it will expand its Google Shopping service internationally to Australia, Japan, Brazil, Spain, Italy, France, Netherlands, U.K., Germany, and Switzerland.

The expansion will begin in February of 2013 and the countries listed above will experience a transition to a Google Shopping modeled around Product Listing Ads. The transition will be fully complete by the end of Q2 2013.

Google is encouraging international merchants to participate in the service by offering promotional credits. Merchants who sign up for the service and create a Product Listing Ad Campaign by April 12, 2013 will be eligible to receive the promotional credit. Some merchants will also qualify for a monthly 10% credit on their PLA budget.

You can sign up for the program or check if you’re eligible for the promotional credits here.

Data feed updates

Adding international merchants isn’t the only change Google is making. In order to better accommodate international merchants, they are updating their international feed specifications. Vice President of Product Management at Google Shopping wrote, the changes “will align our global product feeds more closely and enable us to surface better results to the users.” However, the feed specification updates will not take effect until March 2013 and only merchants using the reduced Product Ads feed specifications will need to update their feeds.

Sameer Samat also announced, “We will also be releasing a new set of Google Shopping program policies. The detailed policies will be announced in January next year.”
