New research from CPC Strategy reveals significant advances by Amazon, and details how retailers and brands can take action
San Diego, CA — January 18, 2018 — CPC Strategy, a retail-focused digital marketing agency, announced today the publication of its 2018 U.S. Forecast on Apparel Shopping Trends: How Shoppers will Browse and Buy Clothing. The survey wasn’t designed to revolve around Amazon, but the results demonstrated that shopping on Amazon is a trend that’s only gaining momentum. Cowen & Co. estimate Amazon will sell $28 billion worth of clothing in 2018, and others have predicted that Amazon’s apparel sales could reach $85 billion by 2020.
While luxury brands on the marketplace remain as elusive as a Birkin bag, CPC Strategy’s survey of 1500 U.S. shoppers hints that Amazon may have finally hit their stride in a few key apparel sectors. The research uncovered several important insights for apparel brands – including where bricks-and-mortar still have the upper hand and how brands can compete in the changing retail landscape. A full report on the study’s methodology and findings, along with analysis of the results, can be found on the CPC Strategy website.
“We knew that Amazon dominated most retail verticals,” said Rick Backus, CEO and co-founder of CPC Strategy. “But when we saw the survey results, we were pretty surprised that over 50% of shoppers opted to buy apparel most frequently on Amazon in the past six months. That speaks volumes about the work Amazon has done to improve their apparel shopping experience, and it’s a strong call to arms for apparel retailers and brands to take their e-commerce strategy to the next level.”
The survey was commissioned by CPC Strategy and conducted by Survata, who asked 1,500 online respondents ages 18-65 a series of questions, including where they prefer to shop for clothing online and which website features they value the most when shopping online.
Among the key findings of the report, casual apparel and basics are safe bets for online shoppers. When asked about the types of apparel they purchased in the last six months, 54% of shoppers included casual apparel such as jeans and sundresses in their list. Athletic wear, outerwear, loungewear, and basics all hovered between 25% – 29.3%.
Other key takeaways:
- 30.8% of shoppers who purchased apparel on Amazon cited fast/free shipping as the reason
- 25.6% of shoppers prefer to shop for apparel on their phone or tablet
- 20% of shoppers value the ability to filter products on an apparel site
